College Recruiting 101: The Modern Guide

A Parent's and Athlete's Guide to American College Recruiting

Recruiting is confusing. You've heard myths that recruiting is only for elite athletes, that you need a 4.0 GPA, or that coaches only care about camps. Most of that is wrong. This guide covers how recruiting actually works in 2025+.

Smart Recruiting: Scout First, Then Reach

Most families still follow the old playbook: build a profile, hope coaches notice, accept whatever offer comes, and then spend four years trying to make it work. The modern, smarter path starts with scouting.

The Old Way (Still Happens)

  • Build a profile and wait for inbound interest
  • Say yes to the first offer that feels "big enough"
  • Only later realize the roster was crowded or the coach left
  • Spend four years trying not to regret the decision

The Smart Way (This Is You Now)

  • SCOUT: Research programs systematically (rosters, coach stability, depth charts)
  • KNOW: Build a complete profile (film, stats, academics, character)
  • REACH: Contact coaches at programs you have already evaluated
  • Show coaches you are informed, not desperate—coaches respect targeted outreach

This flips the power dynamic. You are not hoping to be discovered. You are informed and selective about where you spend your time, energy, and eligibility.

Use Tosch.ai to research like coaches do

Common Myths (That Are Wrong)

  • Coaches don't look beyond D1 conferences (False: 1,800+ D1 programs exist, plus D2, D3, NAIA, JUCO)
  • You need a 4.0 GPA and elite measurables (False: Academic and athletic requirements vary by school)
  • Your club coach's network gets you recruited (Partial: Your film, profile, and engagement matter more)
  • You should only reach out after junior year (False: Building your profile freshman year is smart)
  • D3 offers are all you can expect if you're not D1 elite (False: D2/D3 scholarships are full rides at many schools)

What This Guide Covers

  • How recruiting actually works (traditional vs. modern funnel)

  • The recruiting timeline and key milestones

  • What coaches actually evaluate

  • How to be recruitable

  • How to use data in your recruiting

Chapter 1: How College Recruiting Actually Works

The Traditional Funnel

  1. Coaches attend showcases, tournaments, club seasons
  2. Coaches watch club/HS game film
  3. Coaches request athlete contact info (NCAA rules allow after sophomore)
  4. Coaches email recruiting questionnaires
  5. Athlete responds
  6. Coach evaluates academics, measurables, team fit
  7. Coach extends offer (verbal or written)
  8. Athlete commits

The Modern Funnel (2025+)

  1. Coaches receive athlete profiles (RMG, NCSA, Hudl, etc.)
  2. Coaches watch online film (YouTube, Hudl, athlete website)
  3. Coaches see engagement metrics (coaches viewing, time watched)
  4. Coaches see coach reviews and verified feedback
  5. Coaches reach out via direct message (if interested)
  6. Athlete responds with availability, academic targets, timeline
  7. Coach evaluates (film quality, engagement, academics, measurables)
  8. Coach extends offer

Key Difference

Coaches are looking for athletes who look serious and professional, not just talented. An athlete with honest film, verified coach reviews, and a professional profile stands out. You now control that narrative.

Chapter 2: The Recruiting Timeline

Freshman Year

What to do:

  • Start building a profile (free tier on RMG, Hudl, or similar)
  • Play club / HS and get as much film as possible
  • Identify your primary position and strengths
  • Start tracking academic progress

What NOT to do:

  • Don't commit and rush decision (you have time)
  • Don't ignore academics (many athletes miss this)

Sophomore Year

What to do:

  • Coaches can now contact you (NCAA rules)
  • Build your video analytics (watch your film more than once)
  • Request first coach reviews (from club coaches, HS coaches, camp directors)
  • Start visiting college websites (but don't reach out yet unless you're elite)

What NOT to do:

  • Don't get discouraged if coaches aren't emailing yet (sophomore year is still early)

Junior Year (Peak Recruiting)

What to do:

  • Identify recruiting targets (using data if possible—RMG's Smart College Search)
  • Understand what each school needs (roster gaps, class size, academics)
  • Reach out to coaches (if not hearing from them)
  • Attend official and unofficial visits
  • Request more coach reviews
  • Upgrade to paid tier (Pro or Super Charged Pro)

Senior Year

What to do:

  • If not verbally committed, ramp up recruiting (this is your last recruiting season)
  • Finalize visits
  • Get any final reviews
  • Sign National Letter of Intent (binding)

Chapter 3: What Coaches Actually Evaluate

Coaches are looking for:

1. Film Quality

Does the athlete stand out on film? Position-specific: WR (route running, catch radius), QB (footwork, accuracy), etc.

2. Measurables (Physical Attributes)

Height, weight, speed. Sport-specific: Track is 100%, Basketball is mostly it, Baseball is 40%, Soccer is 20%.

3. Academics

GPA, test scores, course rigor. Varies: D1 Power (3.5+), D1 mid-tier (3.2-3.5), D2 (3.0+), D3 (2.8+).

4. Character & Coachability

Do they work hard? Listen? Are they humble? Evaluated through camp feedback, coach reviews, and in-person interactions.

5. Fit

System fit, academic fit, team culture fit, positional need. The Modern Factor: Verified coach feedback. If you have 5 verified reviews saying "coachable, works hard," coaches believe it.

Chapter 4: How to Be Recruitable

1. Build Your Profile (Tier: Free)

  • Professional headshot + position photo
  • 5-10 minutes of best film (game film, not highlight)
  • Clear bio (sport, position, grad year, school)
  • Academic info (GPA, test scores)
  • Contact info

Time investment: 2 hours initially, 30 mins/month to update

2. Expand Your Film (Tier: Free)

  • Game film from last 2 seasons
  • Measurable shots (height reference, 40-yard dash, vertical)
  • Versatility (multiple positions, if applicable)

Time investment: 2-3 hours/season

3. Get Coach Reviews (Tier: Premium)

  • Ask coaches you've worked with to review you on RecruitMyGame
  • Club coaches, camp directors, HS coaches, recruiting coaches
  • You need at least 3-5 reviews for credibility
  • Coaches trust coaches. Reviews are underrated.

Time investment: Ongoing

4. Be Responsive & Professional

  • If coaches email you, respond ASAP (within 1 day)
  • Keep it professional. Ask questions. Show interest.

Time investment: As opportunities arise

5. Reach Out Strategically (Tier: Pro+)

  • Cold outreach (emailing coaches you want) is okay
  • Research the program
  • Know what they're looking for
  • Mention why YOU fit
  • Include link to your profile
  • Be professional and concise

Time investment: Junior year spring/summer

6. Use Data (Tier: Super Charged Pro)

  • Research schools using roster data (who's playing now)
  • Check opportunity (are there spots for you)
  • Verify coach stability (will this coach still be here)
  • Compare your verified metrics to the roster (do you measure up)
  • This turns recruiting from hope to strategy.

Time investment: Junior year peak

Chapter 5: FAQs

Do I need to be D1 elite to get recruited by D1?

No. 1,800+ D1 programs exist. Mid-major, FCS, and Group of Five schools recruit athletes below D1 elite all the time.

When should I start recruiting?

Sophomore year minimum. Junior year is peak. Some athletes start freshman year just to build film and profile.

Do I need a recruiting coach?

Not necessarily. RMG Pro tier + Super Charged Pro gives you most of what a recruiting coach would (data, organization, templates). Recruiting coaches add personalized guidance and their network. Choose based on budget.

Should I commit as soon as I get an offer?

No. Take your time. Visit. Learn about the program. Talk to current players. Your recruiting decision is one of the biggest life decisions you'll make.

What if coaches aren't contacting me?

This is normal, especially before junior year. Options: 1) Reach out to coaches proactively, 2) Attend showcases/camps, 3) Request reviews from coaches you've worked with, 4) Upgrade to Pro/Super Charged Pro, 5) Consider a recruiting coach if not getting traction.

Can I get recruited if I'm not in a big recruiting area?

Yes. Film and profile matter more than location. If you're legit on film, coaches will find you. Online recruiting changed everything.
